Juan Sebastián Sánchez Duque, originally from Manizales, Colombia, began his musical training at the age of 16 with the Redentorista Symphonic Band of Manizales. He later continued his studies at the University of Caldas in Colombia and at Berklee College of Music in Boston, United States.
Juan Sebastián performed with the Orchestra of the Americas (YOA) during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, touring Ukraine, Poland, Scotland, and Germany in 2018, and Mexico in 2019. He was also a member of the Colombian Youth Philharmonic for five consecutive seasons, from 2016 to 2020. His achievements include winning the Youth Music Exchange International Solo Percussion Competition, performing at the UTT National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (2017); winning the Young Soloists Competition of the Caldas Symphony Orchestra (2018); and receiving the Ministry of Culture of Colombia’s national grant to participate with the Young Federal Band of the Valencian Community in Spain (2019).
He has also collaborated as a guest percussionist with the Boston Pops of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (2024), the Colombian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra (2019–2020). At Berklee, he received the Outstanding Percussionist Award from the Percussion Department and Berklee’s Instrumental Performance Award in 2024.
In December 2023, Juan Sebastián was invited to perform as a soloist on llanera maracas and world percussion at Carnegie Hall in New York during the "78th United Nations General Assembly" concert. In the field of world percussion, he has performed with renowned international artists such as Usher, Lalah Hathaway, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tony Succar, Andrés Cepeda, Chucho Valdés, Daymé Arocena, Pasión Vega, Erika Ender, and Toto la Momposina, among others. He also participated as a performer and ambassador of the Latin Grammy Foundation at the 24th Latin GRAMMY Awards in Seville, Spain, and taught a masterclass at the Musica Riva International Music Festival in Riva del Garda, Italy (2023).
Juan Sebastián has appeared in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg; the Konzerthaus in Berlin; the Musikverein in Vienna; the Opera House in Kyiv; Usher Hall in Edinburgh; the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico; Boston Symphony Hall; and Carnegie Hall in New York. He currently collaborates as an artist with Austrian multipercussionist Martin Grubinger and with Red Bull on high-level international projects.
In parallel, he is developing Percussible, an innovative educational platform dedicated to the preservation, teaching, and digital documentation of traditional and endangered musical rhythms. Percussible integrates interactive technology, AI-assisted analysis, and immersive multimedia experiences to create the most comprehensive global archive of traditional percussion. The platform is designed to serve both professional musicians and vulnerable communities, ensuring access, preservation, and continuity of cultural heritage through a modern, intuitive, and globally accessible ecosystem. Juan Sebastián’s artistic vision merges orchestral precision, world-percussion expertise, and technological innovation, shaping a new path for contemporary percussion and positioning his work at the forefront of cultural preservation and creative transformation.
