Alirio Jose Torrealba

Venezuela (WPG 2024 Soloist)

Alirio José Torrealba, known internationally as iPlayMaracas, is a pioneering Venezuelan maracas virtuoso, educator, and global ambassador for traditional Latin American percussion. Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Alirio discovered his passion for rhythm at an early age, drawn to the infectious energy and cultural significance of the maracas. His deep connection to Venezuelan folk music laid the foundation for a lifelong mission: to elevate the maracas from a folkloric accompaniment to a virtuosic solo instrument.

Over the years, Alirio has developed a unique and highly technical playing style that fuses traditional joropo rhythms with modern improvisation and cross-genre innovation. He is widely recognised for his rhythmic precision, speed, and creativity, earning him a reputation as one of the most exciting maracas performers in the world. Through constant experimentation and refinement, he has transformed the maracas into an instrument of expressive solo performance—captivating audiences from conservatories to concert halls. In addition to his performance career, Alirio is a passionate educator. He is the founder of the iPlayMaracas Academy, a platform dedicated to sharing techniques, repertoire, and the cultural heritage of Venezuelan percussion with a global audience.

His book The Art of Maracas has become a valuable resource for percussionists seeking to master this often-overlooked instrument. He has presented masterclasses and recitals around the world, including at universities and festivals in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Alirio’s influence extends beyond the stage and classroom. His signature Alirio Torrealba Joropo Maracas, handcrafted from Venezuelan totumo gourds and designed for both power and clarity, are used by percussionists worldwide.

As a performer and social media personality, he engages with thousands of followers through his popular Instagram account, @iplaymaracas, offering insights, tutorials, and live performances to a rapidly growing community. From grassroots traditions in Caracas to the global spotlight, Alirio José Torrealba has redefined what it means to play maracas. Through his performances, teaching, and advocacy, he continues to inspire a new generation of percussionists to explore the depth and power of this vibrant instrument.
