The World Percussion Group

Assembling the world’s elite

Artistic Director: Tim Palmer (Maraca2 Percussion Duo)

WPG European Tour Details

The World Percussion Group is back for 2021. This time it's a fully funded experience! Why not audition for the World's leading touring percussion group?

Last year was certainly a year which bought many challenges globally, particularly the unimaginable impact to the world of arts. With safety. being at the heart of WPG we were faced with a very challenging decision to postpone the WPG 2020 tour to the Baltic Capitals. Although the situation is improving, it is unquestionable that forming a percussion group which travels multiple countries with artists from many different countries is still a way away from being a reality.

At WPG we still hold our core values. Our mission is to continue providing a cultural professional development platform for up and coming artists. Although travel is off the agenda for 2021, we have put together a platform that we believe to be cutting edge in the industry and will provide you with the perfect opportunity to increase your employability and visibility.

WPG 2021 V-Tour will consist of an online virtual tour like no other. A carefully selected roster of exceptional coaches will put you through your paces in mutliple masterclasses from:  Colin Currie, Steven Schick, Katarzyna Mycka, Svet Stoyanov, Tim Adams, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Mendi Singh, Joseph Pereira, Johan Bridger, John Wooton, Emmanuel Sejourne, Alexej Gerassimez, Pius Cheung, Tomer Yariv. These masterclasses will be via zoom and some will be livestreamed through our specially developed livestream platform which can be seen below. Your opportunity to ask the very best in the business those burning questions that you've always head.

Applications are open to soloists, general percussionists and existing chamber groups (duos, trios, quartets) and an estimated 10 artists will be selected for the V-Tour. You will also have the chance to showcase your performances through our platform, learn and develop your techniques delivering lectures with our Clinic Coach Jason Huxtable. These clinics will be livestreamed with audience participation and our marketing team will invite multiple conservatoire, college and universities to take part in your session. Interacting with our commercial partners WPG has received over 2 million views worldwide to date and we hope that this will help strengthen your experience.

The tour dates are as follows and the schedule is flexible to allow you to take part around your pre-existing commitments (performing or education).
Monday 18th October 2021
Sunday 31st October 2021
*Pre-recordings of repertoire may be required through the summer months.

Additional solo opportunities offer the potential to record and premiere the WPG 2020 Composer-in-Residence piece written by winner Brian Blume entitled, 'uprooted' for solo and backing track. The ensemble will also have opportunity to perform a specially commissioned piece written by WPG 2020 Composer-in-Residence runner-up Alejandro Coello. This piece is a culmination of a larger scale work based on the book of revelations and is written for 8 percussionists and media visuals. Alejandro will carefully tailor for remote recording and will be supplying click tracks, rehearsal aids and more for your ease and convenience.

We believe that the fusion of top class coaches, an exciting new WPG online interface and network of upcoming artists will help you develop your strategy for success, enrich you as a musician and offer extensive visibility globally!

Brian Blume: WPG Composer in Residence Winner 2020

As a performer, composer, and educator, it is Brian Blume’s passion to connect with audiences and students through the art of percussion. In 2020, Blume joined the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, D.C. In his role with the Ceremonial Band, he serves his country through supporting high-profile ceremonies and events in the national capital region.

Blume also performs regularly as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and studio percussionist, and has performed with groups such as the Orlando Philharmonic, Imperial Symphony Orchestra, Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, BluHill Percussion Duo, the Indianapolis Colts drumline, and Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps.   For seven years, Blume served as Assistant Professor of Percussion at Southeastern University (Lakeland, FL), where he founded the school’s first drumline, created a world music course, and established a percussion studio.

During his time at SEU, Blume introduced numerous opportunities never previously available to students at the university. He is a sought after adjudicator and clinician and has presented at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, state PAS Day of Percussion events, and several universities and high schools around the country.

As a composer, Blume seeks to compose imaginative music that affects listeners and performers in an authentic way. His skillful writing for percussion won him the opportunity to be the 2020-2021 World Percussion Group Composer-in-Residence. His compositions for percussion are performed regularly across the country and abroad and are published by Tapspace Publications and drop6 media (via RowLoff). His work for TV broadcast has been aired nationwide on ESPN, CBS, Big Ten Network, and MTV.

Blume earned both Master and Bachelor of Music degrees in percussion performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. He is an artist endorser for Pearl/Adams, Innovative Percussion, Remo, and Grover Pro Percussion, and he is a member of the Percussive Arts Society, ASCAP, and NAfME. NEW COMMISSION:(To be recorded by a member of WPG 2021)
Title: (up)Rooted For solo percussion + track (alternate version for soloist + percussion quartet) Shorter description: Inspired by the constants in life that keep us rooted amidst the storms of change that threaten to rip us from the ground. Longer description: Changes in one’s life are inevitable. As is often said, “The only thing constant in life is change.” However, throughout one’s life, some things do remain. While it can feel like the storms of life often threaten to uproot us, focusing on those things that stay the same through the ups and downs of life is what inspired this piece. Like a tree with deep strong roots, planted firmly by streams of water, I have found I best weather storms when I root myself in the things that matter most and do not change. Elements of this piece remain persistent while other elements threaten to displace us, and even when the music strays, it always seems to find its way back to its roots.

Alejandro Coello: WPG Composer in Residence Runner-Up 2020

Alejandro Coello Calvo (July 25, 1989) is a Spanish percussionist, producer and composer. At only 23 years old, he became percussion solo teacher at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar. He has been invited to perform, lecture, teach masterclasses and serve as jury in competitions by prestigious organizations from Asia, America and Europe. All these experiences have enriched his techniques, which has applied to his style.

Known for a valuable diversity of genres and a delicate style, Alejandro has been making his contribution to the music world both nationally and internationally, as a soloist, orchestra musician and music producer/composer. His works have been premiered in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Berliner Philharmonie. The music album “One Minute Later” — a collaboration with Diego Barber, Eric Harland and Ben Williams — has just introduced him into the jazz scene as well.

On April 5th 2019 he released his first album “Percussion Theory” featuring jazz guitarist Diego Barber, Xabier Casal and famous drummer Simon Phillips with the legendary Sunnyside Records (NY). In 2021 he was featured in the Album “Drago” together with Craig Taborn and Theo Bleckmann. Together with film director Arthur Keir, he founded the Arts Management, music and film production company ArtGovernment.

NEW COMMISSION: (to be recorded remotely by WPG 2021 members)
This is the last piece belonging to the extensive work “Percussion Opera” by Alejandro Coello. A concept based on the biblical book of Revelations and written exclusively for solo percussion and electronics. Except for this number, written for 8 percussionists, piano, electronics, and video projection, where individuality, separation, the sense of competitiveness (one of the main subjects of this works), and personal interests become one. Is the end and at the same time the beginning. It is like starting all over again, but this time altogether, welcomed by the same father and motivated by the same goal. In these times we are living, we can also translate this into the need of searching together new ideas for music, new ways to collaborate and help each other but also returning to the basics, to value the raw material, the generator of everything, to speak the truth, to love.
