LAS VEGAS SUMMER ACADEMY 2019

WPG Summer Academy 2019 - University of Nevada, Las Vegas - Friday August 2nd - Friday August 9th 2019

Maraca2 are delighted to announce a new partnership with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Since it's inception, the Maraca2 World Percussion Group has inspired hundreds of percussionists worldwide, having toured extensively across the Globe. The recent rigourous audition process saw over 100 applicants for the 2019 Spain, UK and Portugal Tour.

The Summer Academy is a new initiative by Maraca2, providing further opportunities for young up-and-coming percussionists. The week long Academy will focus on both solo and chamber skills, advice and guidance on how to submit a strong WPG Tour audition and an amazing opportunity to once again network with percussionists globally. There will be plenty of opportunity to perform in groups, deliver mock masterclasses,  receive expert guidance from our experienced faculty, Maraca2 Percussion Duo (Tim Palmer & Jason Huxtable), INK Experiment (Ivana Bilic & Nikola Krbanyevitch), Balkan Percussion Duo (Ksenija Komljenovic & Kiril Angelov) and former WPG Principal, Cameron Leach.

We realise that music is an important focal point when offering such educational experiences, but we also feel that it is just as important to get to know fellow musicians from around the world. To this affect, we will also offer exceptional communal accommodation, providing an opportunity for cultural sharing (Cuisine from different Countries, tours to the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon and others will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the world of both Percussion and the enticing City of Las Vegas!)

Balkan Percussion Duo (Ksenija Komljenovic & Kiril Angelov)

The collaboration between award-winning percussionists, Kiril Angelov and Ksenija Komljenovic, began in Miami in 2015, at the acclaimed Frost School of Music, when the two cooperated on several high-profile chamber music projects and recordings. In the following years, Kiril and Ksenija shared the stage in numerous contexts – from playing in orchestras to collaborating with contortionists, to performing a world premiere under the strobe lights of the III Points alternative music festival. Balkan Percussion Duo was formed in 2017 and has, since then, had its inaugural performance on June 21, 2017 for International Music Day (La Fête de la Musique) at the Kolarac Concert Hall in Belgrade, Serbia and concerts across the United States. Invitations to perform across Europe, South America, and Asia followed.

In February 2018, the duo won Second Prize at the prestigious International Percussion Competition Luxembourg. Their performance of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor BWV 565 (posted by Classic FM) went viral in the summer of 2018, amassing over half a million views to this date. Balkan Percussion Duo embodies a union of two divergent players who share a common background. The duo focuses on collaborations with living composers and performing new percussion repertoire, while keeping rooted in musical tradition by duo's own reinvented transcriptions of famous works. As a result, their distinctive musical tendencies and means of expression give a unique blend of sound.

INK Experiment (Ivana Bilic & Nikola Krbanyevitch)

I.N.K. Experiment Duo is a dynamic and creative ensemble interested both in classical music and new styles, seeking inspiration from collaborations with composers and artists of different backgrounds. The peculiar mix and blending of their classical background and various professional experiences - rock, pop, contemporary, experimental and traditional music, is at the source of duo’s flexibility and spontaneity.

The duo first met at the 2014 Convention of the French Percussion Association in Paris and has been active ever since, appearing at international concert halls, music festivals and percussion events in The Netherlands, Germany, USA, China, Switzerland, Croatia and France (Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Osor Musical Evenings, Zeltsman marimba Festival, Amsterdam Marimba Weekend, Westfalen Classics, PASIC, Rittenhouse SoundWorks, IBMW, Kalima, Teng Yu Ning Xin Festival,...). They are both active as teachers, Ivana being on faculty at the Zagreb University in Croatia and Nikola at the Evreux Conservatory in France. They have given masterclasses and workshops worldwide and served as jury members at competitions.

They have several ongoing international projects and collaborations: “INKarnation” is a tango nuevo crossover trio cooperation with bandoneon in France, featuring original creations and arrangements. “Watchers of the Skies” is an arrangement collection of progressive rock music from the 70ties, with Nikola and Ivana leading a large percussion ensemble. One of the highlights has been the appearance at the open-air stage on a lake at the summer festival ZGkul in Zagreb. In 2018 they have started the collaboration with the jazz/rock quartet Chui and will be featured guests on their new album. Multimedia projects in France and Croatia “ElektroINKeMenT”, “Arabesques pour des ombres imMobiles” and “Orange vs Blue” with multimedia artists, composers and mechanical installations. Last summer at the prestigious Dubrovnik summer festival, they received massive media coverage and audience acclaim for their interactive multimedia performance in the heart of the Old City. Upcoming performances include: concerts in France (Lyon), Croatia (Zagreb, Rovinj, Zadar, Korcula, Opatija), China (Shanghai and Beijing), Columbia (Cali), creation of a new work for a sonic installation, etc…

They have commissioned and premiered several new pieces from international artists of different styles (Lucas Guinot, Teodora Stepancic, Jean-Luc Rimey Meille, Gordon Stout, Gordan Tudor, Olja Jelaska…) and arranged music of various genres. Nikola and Ivana are authors of several pieces for different ensembles (Edition Svitzer, Inkoplastika Edition). The duo is endorsed by Marimbaone. www.inkexperimentduo.com

His latest project, the Leach | Peters Percussion Duo, debuted on the Eastman Summer Concert Series in July 2018. Leach’s 2018-2019 season is marked by an array of solo appearances, guest artist engagements, and world premieres. Kicking off with a performance at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China, Leach then embarks on recital and clinic tours of California, Florida, and the Midwest. In March 2019, Leach will give the world premiere of Dave Maric’s Spiel, a percussion concerto for wind ensemble and electronics commissioned for him by the Capital University Conservatory of Music. Following a week-long residency at Purdue University Fort Wayne, Leach will tour a recital program throughout the Pacific Northwest as the newest member of Orphic Percussion, a California-based percussion quartet. To close out the season, Leach will serve on faculty at the MalletLab Summer Intensive in West Palm Beach, FL, and will spend a week in residence as the featured artist for the Space City New Music Festival in Houston, TX.

Looking ahead, Leach will make his concerto debut with the Grammy-nominated Dallas Winds in January 2020, and premiere a new percussion concerto by Adam Roberts with the New Albany Symphony Orchestra during the 2020-2021 season.

Maraca2 (Tim Palmer & Jason Huxtable)

Maraca2 are currently respected as one of the World’s leading Percussion Ensembles. Tim Palmer and Jason Huxtable met whilst studying at the Birmingham Conservatoire in England. Whilst there, they attained the highest degree classifications, achieved distinction in the postgraduate course specialising in percussion duo and now teach at the Conservatoire as tutors of percussion. In 2014, they were both bestowed with the honour of becoming honorary members of the institution.

Maraca2 perform regularly at festivals and concert halls worldwide and have appeared as artists at many of the major percussion events including an evening concert at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. They have visited over 50 universities around the world and through this activity have inspired hundreds of young percussionists to pursue a career within the percussive arts.

In January 2018, Maraca2 performed a brand new Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. The commission by LA Philharmonic was written by their Principal Timpanist Joseph Pereira. The piece 'Threshold' received multiple standing ovations and was performed numerous times at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Further performances are scheduled for 2019.

LA Times
'Gustavo Dudamel, the L.A. Phil, the British percussion duo Maraca2 (Tim Palmer and Jason Huxtable) and Pereira himself on six timpani performed in envelope-stretching ways that turned everyone into a giant percussion ensemble, inhaling and exhaling as one. Threshold had no trouble holding my attention over its 25-minute span'.
